Essential Oils, Massage and Health

Massage by JMarie builds treatment plans specifically around each clients' unique needs. A lot of requests revolve around things like headaches, muscle aches, and stress relief. Massage can be a great tool to soothe these complaints, but when paired with essential oils, symptoms often subside quicker and stay away longer. So, today we want to talk a little more in-depth about what essential oils are, why we use them and how you can make their use part of your everyday health.

What Are Essential Oils?

Well, the most simple answer is: they are natural oils that are expressed from some part of a plant. In more detail: the oils themselves are concentrated, highly potent chemical compounds found in the plants' roots, seeds, flowers, leaves or bark and they give a plant its scent, protect it from hazardous environmental conditions, and even assist it with pollination, among other functions and benefits.

Why do Massage by JMarie Therapists use Essential Oils in their treatments?

Adding a few drops of peppermint, lavender, or eucalyptus to the face cradle cover are go-to's for many therapists because generally people like the scent of those oils. Something that smells good can have a positive effect on stress levels just because the experience is positive, but Massage by JMarie therapists like to dive a bit deeper into personalizing each treatment. The only way we know what to use is by asking the right questions to gain important details from our clients about things like current symptoms, past symptoms and what they most want help addressing. These pieces of information help us narrow our selection of oils. From there we test the essential oils by placing the them under the client's nose to make sure the smell is agreeable before adding them to a treatment. Some are single oils and others are blends of multiple oils, some address allergy flare-ups, muscle aches, attention issues, digestion, headaches, congestion and more. Most often, adding a few drops of the right essential oils can deliver lasting relief to our clients and the feedback we've received has been overwhelmingly positive.

Plus, it smells good.

I don't like anything scented. Essential oils are probably not for me, right?

Your nose is a crazy accurate tool that has kept humans away from extinction forever. In our book, if it smells bad to you, it's probably not right for you. That being said, don't give up just yet...

Now we're not saying that you are going to like the smell of every essential oil, but give essential oils a try. In our experience, most people don't like scented items because they are artificially made to produce a smell that is similar to the real thing. Because the essential oils we use are 100% natural, they don't insight the same problematic responses artificial scents do, and in many cases, the real thing smells completely different than what you're expecting. My best example is melalueca, commonly known as tea tree. If you smell most name brand shampoos that claim to have tea tree in them, and then compare that to the pure essential oil, you might not even recognize it.

Essential oils in my massage? OK. But what would I do with them at home?

Historically, essential oils were used as part of cultural practices and traditions. However, we now have increasing scientific evidence and research showing that essential oils can be effectively and safely used in a wider range of day-to-day practices and routines for amazing natural health benefits. Today, essential oils can be used for cooking, household cleaning, personal hygiene, sleep, boosting immunity, emotional health, weight management, and much, much more.*

When you use essential oils, you'll have more natural solutions and fewer toxic, synthetically manufactured products in your life and home.

You don’t need a degree in chemistry or extensive training to know how to use essential oils effectively. With a basic understanding of safety precautions and application methods, it is easy to start using essential oils.

As you get started with essential oils keep these things in mind:

  • Determine the uses and benefits of the oil you intend to apply.

  • Follow any label and packaging instructions.

  • If you have specific concerns, consult with a healthcare professional first.
